Don't Forget to Clean Some of These Dirtiest Places in Your Home!

There are areas in your house that you never suspected hoard bacteria, dirt, allergens and nasty germs. Find out those places and items that pose easy hiding place for things that could be making you sick.

In the Kitchen

Sponges
Large colonies of bacteria grow in the sponges you use in your kitchen. Antibacterial sponges and dish soaps can reduce the bacteria growth to a certain extent; however, you need to disinfect the sponges on a weekly basis. You may do this either by microwaving the sponges for two to three minutes or by putting it in a bleach solution for 5 minutes.

Kitchen Buttons, Knobs, and Handles
Disinfect frequently used kitchen surfaces such as counters, buttons, and knobs, handles etc. with the help of antibacterial wipes before and after preparing a meal, especially when preparing raw meat or unwashed produce. This is to reduce the bacteria level in the kitchen.

Cutting Boards
There are different opinions among scientists regarding bacteria presence in wooden or plastic cutting boards. When there are more cutting marks on a plastic cutting board, it’ll accommodate more bacteria. And wooden boards are said to be easy hiding place for bacteria. So, whether you use wooden or plastic cutting boards, it’s safe to clean them regularly, and also replace them as and when required.

Your Beloved Coffee Maker Hoards Germs
For cleaning mould particles and bacteria from the coffee maker, make a mixture of equal parts of water and white vinegar and run the liquid through the machine. Repeat it on a monthly schedule to keep your coffee drinks double healthy. While cleaning the coffee maker, run the machine with the above said cleaner and switch it off for one hour after about half of the mixture has run through it. Next switch it on till the complete cleaning mixture comes out. Finally clean thoroughly with pure water to remove all traces of vinegar.

In the Bedroom

Pillows & Sheets
Pillows can become breeding ground for harmful fungus growth, dust mites and bacteria if they are not properly maintained. Effectively laundering the bedding and using anti-allergen pillow covers can solve the problem.
Spray down the stained areas on the bed sheet and pillowcases with a solution of vinegar and water. Then wash them in hot water wash cycle to completely disinfect them.

In the Bathroom

Bath Mat & Floors
Bathroom floors and mats are mostly contaminated with harmful bacteria and other disease causing germs.  Launder bath mats on the highest heat cycle at least once every week, and clean the floors with quality disinfectant.

Laundry Basket
Always give proper attention to your laundry bag. There’s every chance that it’ll be dirty with grime from cloths and bedding. Make sure that you wash the laundry basket also along with dirty clothes. Keep a separate bag for clean clothes so as to keep that bag fresh and neat.

Eye Makeup and Toothbrush
A recent study says around 40% of mascara tubes they tested has been found infected with allergens within just three months of use. So, it’s advisable to change your eye makeup every season.
Another unsuspected item hoarding germs is your toothbrush! Scientists again warn that if you’re keeping your toothbrush uncovered and near to the toilet bowl, then it can get contaminated when flushing the toilet.

Some Useful Cleaning Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

You too can have a life of clean and ordered bliss at your home. Make a note of the following tips to clean your home efficiently.

Brilliant Bathroom Surface Cleaning
Take 1 2/3 cups baking-soda and mix it with 1/2 cup liquid soap in a bowl. Add half a cup of water to dilute the mixture and pour 2 tablespoons white vinegar also into the bowl. Stir the mixture well with a fork to form a fine solution. Transfer the liquid from the bowl to a spray bottle. Close the bottle with its cap and shake well before use. Now spray the liquid as necessary on the bathroom surfaces and scrub with a nylon-backed sponge. Once the stains, soap scum and mildew have been dissolved, rinse the area with water and see a sparkling bathroom.

You can also use ammonia for cleaning the yellowing white tiles (discoloration caused due to wax build up) on the walls of the bathroom. Use a mixture of 1 cup ammonia added into 2 litres of water. Scrub the tiles with a scouring pad till all the traces of wax are removed and finally rinse with water.

The problem with cleaning shower tiles that have lots of nooks and crannies is that some of the cleaning solution often stays stuck there. You can easily manage this situation using a toothbrush to scrub those little nooks as needed.

How to Keep Clean Your Fridges/Freezers
Get your fridge sparkling clean and smelling fresh with a solution of equal parts of water and white vinegar to wash both its interior and exterior. Another option is to try cleaning the refrigerator with a mixture of two tablespoons of baking soda and a quart of warm water. Did you know that white toothpaste can be used to clean deep stains in your fridge?

The plastic handles on the refrigerator are used frequently and sometimes they turn yellow. Try using a baking-soda paste to re-whiten the handle.

Quick Benchtop Cleaning
Sprinkle some baking-soda onto the bench top surface and rub with a damp cloth to bring back the sine and sheen.

For Burnt Black Marks on Your Iron
Scrub the mark firmly with a baking-soda paste to remove the black stuff.  You can also try to get rid of the black patches of burnt cloth fibre and dirt on your iron by scrubbing it with white vinegar and a Dobie Pad.

The baking-soda paste also can be used to slough off stains on your plastic cutting boards. Try this method also: Sprinkle rock salt on a cut lemon and rub it on the stubborn stains.
Make a paste using two tablespoons of salt and one teaspoon of white distilled vinegar and use it for scrubbing your chrome sink to get that extra shine.

How to Clean Mirrors and Glass Windows
Mix one part vinegar and one part water in 16-ounce squirt bottle. Add 2 teaspoons each of corn starch and rubbing alcohol into the bottle along with 8 drops of citrus oil. Close the bottle with cap. Shake it thoroughly and squirt on mirrors and windows, and scrub with old newspapers.  You are sure to get a good shine.

Tricks for Removing Dried Nail Polish from Carpet
Look for a product that is acetone free nail polish remover to dissolve and lift off the polish stain from your carpet. Apply the polish remover on to the affected area and dab at the stain with clean paper towels. That should do it for you.

The vinegar magic mentioned for fridges can be applied to clean your carpets too! Take a mixture of 2 tablespoons salt dissolved in half cup white vinegar and apply it on light stains on the carpet. You need to add 2 tablespoons borax to the mixture if the stain is deep and darker. Wait for some time for the solution to dry, and then vacuum the carpet.

DIY Home Cleaning Tips and When to Call the Pros

It’s better to do cleaning and housekeeping works daily rather than saving everything for one big cleaning task. Get into a daily house cleaning routine: making the bed, doing the dishes after every meal or at least at the end of the day, and sweeping the kitchen floor. This will ensure that your house looks fresh and cleaner every day!

Make Your Own Window Cleaner
You need not to use fancy window and mirror cleaning sprays- they are not only costly, but also inefficient for cleaning stubborn stains. Take one and a half cup of water, and one and half teaspoon each of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a mug. Put three drops of peppermint essential oil into the mixture and fill it in a spray bottle. Your homemade cleaner is ready – now spray it on windows and wipe with a lint-free cloth such as a microfiber cloth.

To permanently remove the menace of water spots from glass shower door, rub it with lemon oil twice or thrice a month. The presence of lemon oil will cause the water to bead up and roll off, thereby keeping glass doors clear and shining.

Tea-Stain Your Fabric and Get Antique Creamy Look
You need not to throw badly stained kitchen towels. You can tea-dye them to get a new creamy brown colour and nice look. Take a metal bucket with boiled water and put five black tea bags in it for 10 minutes. Now take out the tea bags and put the stained linen in the tea mixture and stir gently.  Let it soak for 10 minutes or until you get the desired shade.

Now remove the fabric from the tea mixture and rinse well with warm water and dish soap. The approximate volume of water and the cloth size: 4 cups of water and 4 single cup tea bags will dye roughly 1 yard of fabric.

Wooden Furniture and Kitchen Cabinets
Use natural oils like lemon oil (Old English or Milsek) to revitalize the wood and continue to nourish and protect the wooden furniture and kitchen cabinets. The lemon oil will also help to remove wax build up along with water marks on the wood. Use a plain cloth to rub the oil into the wood and let it dry for 10 minutes or so.

Use flour-sack tea towels made of pure cotton in your kitchen for general cleaning. They are better than paper towels to dry glasses lint-free and to wipe down the stove.
Kitchen Sink

Sprinkle baking soda on the stains or on a damp rag and gently scrub to remove stains in sinks or to buff scuffs off floors. Another method is: make a paste of 1 cup borax and 1/4 cup lemon; apply it on a damp sponge to clean floor tiles and porcelain sinks.

You may not believe, but it's a fact that your dirty kitchen sink sometimes accommodates more bacteria than your toilet seat. That’s why we emphasise to call a quality house cleaner to thoroughly clean your kitchen and bathroom every weekly or fortnightly.

To disinfect the kitchen sink, first clean it with soap and water. Next, spray a mist of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide one after the other. Allow the sink to air-dry. Apply a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and buff the stainless steel sink to avoid water build-up and mould growth. This will also make the sink looking clean and sparkling.

Calendar and Checklist for Yearly Special Cleaning
Ensure that you do the following cleaning tasks at least once a year: wash the windows inside and out; flip and vacuum your mattresses; deep-clean toilets, tub/shower, carpets, and the floors; change the furnace filter- it is better if you can do it twice a year.

These sophisticated cleaning tasks require expertise and hard work. It’s always good to get professional home cleaners to do the tough house cleaning chores. They will be doing it perfectly and so you need not to worry about hygiene and quality housekeeping. Also check with well known house cleaning companies for available cleaning packages that could save you some bucks too.

Removing Blood Stains from Clothes, Carpet and Upholstery- DIY Tips

Blood Stains on Fabric:

What would you do if blood stain occurred on costly clothing?

If the stain is fresh and wet, soak the cloth in cold water and apply some soap. Rub the stained area gently with the soap and wash properly. If the stain doesn’t go completely, put some hydrogen peroxide on the stained area and wash the cloth with a brush applying slight pressure. If the blood stain has already dried when you saw it, first brush the area to remove the surface deposit. Then soak the affected area with some quality stain removal product. Lastly, apply diluted ammonia on the stain and wash the cloth.

On Carpets:

People have a general tendency to immediately rub the stain as soon as it happens! Never do it as it’ll cause the stain to spread further. What you should do is to blot/sponge the stain with a clean white cloth.  The right way is to press down the cloth on to the stain and remove as much blood as possible.

When you see that the stain has spread to a larger area, start blotting from the edges first and move towards the centre to avoid the stain keep spreading.

If the stain is not fresh, use a toothbrush to dust out the outer layer of dried blood. Soak the area with two cups of cold water mixed with one spoon of dishwashing detergent. Use a white cloth to blot the stain. Switch on a fan and allow the strong airflow to dry the carpet.

On Upholstery:

Your guests’ looks always fall on the upholstery whether you like it or not! Even a slight trace of stains will be noticed as upholstery forms elegant decor piece in your home. Try the following method to keep your upholstery in good shape and quality, free from blood stains.

If you see blood stains on the upholstery, never rub it as it’ll only help to spread the stain deep into the fabric. If the stain is fresh and wet, blot or sponge the stain with a pure white cloth. As said earlier, try to blot the stain first from its periphery and slowly get into the centre.

If the stain happened to be old and dry, first scratch it gently with a brush and then do the steps mentioned below.

After removing the initial traces of stain, more thorough cleaning is required. Soak the stained spot with a cup of cold water mixed with half a spoon club soda. Again blot the stained area using a clean, white cloth. Continue blotting the surface till last traces of blood have come out.

Now to lighten the stain further, do the following. Prepare a mixture of 80% water, 10% glycerin, and 10% laundry detergent in a bowl. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake well. Apply this mixture on the stained spot and gently scrub in a circular motion.

Once the stain has been completely removed, pour cold water onto the area, and pat dry with a towel. The mixture of glycerine you just prepared will remain in good condition for a longer time, so preserve it for future blood stain removal.

There are chances that rough methods of blood stain removal by inexperienced hands may damage or discolour your clothes, carpet, or upholstery. Always consult a carpet cleaning specialist if you’re not sure about the stain removal process.

Dealing with Leaky Pipes and Other Home Cleaning Issues

Leaky pipes can cause damage to your home if they are not taken care of in a proper manner. Water leaks are always a headache as it can cause flooding, mould and other issues. When you’re not taking professional help on time for house cleaning and water leak issues, you may risk long term damages to your property.

Check Your Water Taps Regularly

One should know the location of meter tap, or toby, which shuts off main water supply to your property. This is necessary to quickly switch it off in case of an emergency. It’s a good idea to know where your meter taps are before an emergency strikes.

Did you know that screw-down taps turn off in a clockwise direction?! Check and ensure that the meter tap is working properly or else call the water authority personnel who are responsible for repairing it.

Also check for corrosion, stiffness and leakage on the controlling water taps to dishwashers, washing machines, sinks, and other appliances in the kitchen. Any leakage in the mains pressure hot water units and toilet pipes are to be referred to professional plumbers.

Dripping taps or showers in addition to wasting lot of water can also make the sink or bath susceptible to staining. Did you know that a dripping water tap wastes over 70L of water a day? And hot water leakage will cost you dearly.

You can try DIY methods for minor leaks, but it’s good to always seek the advice of your plumber or plumbing retailer before dealing with complicated dripping tap issues.

Leaking Waste Water Pipes

Consider any leaks from the bath, shower or sink waste pipes as serious issues which need timely attention. These leaky waste pipes could damage the foundation structure of your house and will eventually lead to the formation of dampness in the house due to excessive moisture build-up.

More House Cleaning Tips
  • Some people think that a dishwasher needs no particular washing or cleaning because it itself is a ‘washer’! But the truth is that the dishwasher forms an ideal place for the growth of fungi and black yeast, so you need to clean it thoroughly at least once in a month. You can use vinegar to clean the inside of dishwasher. Take a dishwasher-safe cup and pour some vinegar into it before placing it on the top rack of the empty dishwasher. Then run the dishwasher at a hot temperature setting for a full cycle to clean it perfectly of microbes.
  • It is a false notion that wearing gloves means you are safe from harmful bacteria. If you are not keeping the gloves clean enough, beware that they may be hoarding colonies of bacteria. Keep the gloves clean and dry when you’re not using them, and change them once in a month. Gloves have to be treated for about 15 minutes in a solution of hot water mixed with 2 spoons of vinegar.
  • Some people use more cleaning soap thinking that it’ll yield better result. But actually it’s the contrary. More soap is always harmful. Uncleaned soap particles in the clothes, hands and dishes can cause the growth of bacteria. Rinse clothes well enough to remove all soap residue and ensure that they are completely dry before use.
  • Don’t assume that disease causing bacteria are present more in the toilets than other places in the house. In fact, there is high percentage of bacteria concentration on the most used home items such as door handles, television remotes, microwave buttons, and light switches etc. than on your toilet seat. One may also find larger colonies of bacteria in the refrigerator and dish cloths than in the bathrooms. So, give greater attention to those places where there are more germs. Use a disinfectant wipe to clean all those electronic items mostly shared in the home.

Regarding home maintenance, it is good to remember the saying- A stitch in time saves nine! A leaky, unclean home can be a major worry to you. Never hesitate to call professional home cleaners and plumbers when you spot some issues.

Checklist for Homeowners to Keep Their Properties Well Maintained

Everything from regular home cleaning and preventative care to repairs and replacements can be termed as home maintenance. It’s good to get reliable, practical information on common house maintenance problems, their causes, and possible solutions.

Though Do-It-Yourself house maintenance is favoured by many New Zealanders, it’s necessary to know when you should go for DIY methods and when it’s time to call a professional. Inspect your property regularly and readily do the repairs on time. Keep with you the contact details of affordable home cleaners and plumbers etc. in New Zealand so as to call them promptly in case there are maintenance issues which you can’t do yourself.

Let’s check some of the important aspects of home maintenance that’ll help you to keep your home healthy & safe:
  • Understand the common preventive maintenance requirements of all areas in your house to avoid some problems from occurring- timely gutter cleaning, opening the windows regularly for proper ventilation, occasionally checking the roof cladding etc. are some examples of preventive maintenance works.
  • Small repairs should be addressed at the right time to prevent them from becoming large maintenance issues. This way you can save money by fixing problems before they get bigger.
  • Suppose some damage has occurred in a rental property, or there is need for repairs, you should have a clear understanding of the situation as to who should make the fixing done and pay the bills.
  • Know your limitations while trying DIY maintenance practices. Remember to take the help of a professional service provider to do important maintenance works in your home.
  • Another serious issue with houses in New Zealand is dampness inside the house. A damp home is not a healthy home as the moisture getting collected indoors can cause diseases. It’s to be prevented by properly insulating, ventilating and heating your home. If there are leaks in the house, they must be repaired promptly and thoroughly by a professional.

How to Make Your Home Smell Amazing and Look Fresh

Standard house cleaning companies normally bring quality products and cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaner, mops, brooms etc., when they come for your home cleaning task.

Pick up the best house cleaning offer that suits you well- it should be time saving, flexible, and affordable cleaning service with great customer care.

While selecting cleaning products and procedures, ask your home cleaning professionals to reduce the negative impact on our environment by keeping in mind the characteristics of petrochemicals and solvents. Nobody uses 100% natural cleaning products, but it’s good to be nature-friendly as far as possible.

It’s a fact that a clean home imparts very comfortable and wonderful feelings without you directly noticing it. It’ll enlighten the spirits of all family members when everything is neat and tidy. For this you need to give your home cleaning task to somebody who is an expert in the detailed, customized housekeeping services.

Find below some of the most germ-prone areas in your house:
1. Kitchen sponges and dish rags that you use to clean countertops, dishes etc. are found to be very dirty in most homes, carrying illness-causing bacteria, and other germs. They also contain colonies of mould. So, ensure to rinse the sponge or cloth in hot water, squeeze out the water, and keep it dry. Occasionally sterilize a wet sponge by drying it in the microwave for one minute. Daily wash the rags. When cleaning countertops, use a disinfecting spray and change sponge every two weeks.
2. Another area that harbours germs is the kitchen sink. Knives and cutting boards that have traces of raw meat, and fruits and food particles left in the sink basin encourage heavy germ growth! Ensure to daily scour the area with a scrub brush and a cleaning product as advised by your home cleaner to remove bacteria.
3. Your TV remote controls, and computer keyboards & mouse are often used by members of the family and contain large colonies of bacteria if you don’t give particular attention. Swab them with a well-wrung-out disinfecting wipe at least once in a week.

Another important point to keep in mind: you’ll get guaranteed results only if you call insured and police verified house cleaners. Enjoy hygienically clean toilets, dining area, kitchen, and so on with a trusted house cleaning company in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington & Christchurch in New Zealand, and also several places across Australia. How to Solve Your Home Cleaning Headaches

If you can devote some time daily for house cleaning, the task may not pile up to become a massive cleaning project for you! Schedule your home cleaning task on a daily to weekly basis as per the checklist given below-

A better plan is to do the cleaning process from room to room. Cut the work done on the cleaning list as you finish cleaning each room. You can also delegate the cleaning task to members of the family including children to give them some responsibility in the overall house cleaning process. As you detail one room for each family member, your cleaning task will also get quickly finished.

Daily Vacuum the Areas that Have More Traffic
You need to daily vacuum only the common areas, not every room in the house. The living room, and the dining and kitchen area where most of the members spend more time has to be vacuumed every day to keep the area clean and hygienic.  Floor carpets also need daily cleaning especially when there are children and pets around.

Here’s a Weekly Task List for Your Home Cleaning
The checklist for weekly cleaning will contain a long list of tasks. Here you’ll have to take a decision whether to do it yourself or call a home cleaning service provider. If you have the time and inclination to do it, well and good; just follow the procedures mentioned in the following paragraphs. However, if you want to relax on a nice weekend going for a picnic or visiting some friends, you can detail the task to a responsible home cleaner in New Zealand and see a fresh and glittering home when you come back!

Some of the important weekly home cleaning tasks are given below:

1. Vacuuming All the Areas in the House
Vacuum clean all carpet, wooden or stone floors, rugs and their underside, your curtains, and wherever you can do the vacuuming. When you vacuum wooden floors or curtains ensure to use appropriate attachments to the machine so that it’ll work properly. Vacuuming curtains is followed by many people as it’ll remove some dirt and dust, by which you can prolong the washing cycle.

2. Cleaning the Toilet
Not the kind of job for everybody, but if you don’t particularly dislike it you can manage it with a quality cleaning product. Apply the cleaner to the toilet bowl, its sides and under the rim, and wait for sometime before cleaning it. Use a strong toilet brush to remove stains. Use separate brushes for toilet bowl cleaning and the floor cleaning. Remove stubborn stains from floor and wall tiles using separate cleaner if required.

If you hate toilet cleaning, you can assign this particular task to a home cleaning company in New Zealand. Remember, a professional cleaner can do it the best way in a hygienic manner!
Same points are applicable for cleaning the bath and showers too. Here you’ll encounter soap scum and mould build-ups in addition to stubborn stains.

3. Refrigerator Cleaning
Regularly remove any food items or vegetables that are past their ‘use by’ date- Now you may ask how to identify it? Of course, you can manage it by smelling and seeing! Take out anything that is getting musty, anything that smells bad, or anything that’s visibly rotten. This will save you enough space and also make the inside of the fridge healthy and hygienic.

Everybody will agree that house cleaning is a very tedious task. It can take away your precious time and energy even if you’re not employed. You can solve this issue by calling a professional house cleaner occasionally for full cleaning, and regularly for particular cleaning tasks such as kitchen cleaning, oven cleaning, toilet cleaning etc.

Opt for Only Safe Home Cleaning Services in New Zealand for Your Bathroom Cleaning

Cleaning your bathroom becomes a problem when it gets too dirty. If you check the market, you will find most of the ingredients contained in regular cleaning products are too harsh for your bathroom walls, grout and countertop. They do clean the bathroom but they damage the area. Often you need to repair them or even replace them with the passage of time.

There are some areas of the bathroom that are challenging to clean. Many homeowners have to resort to using a toothbrush to clean the crannies and the nooks of tiles. This needs a lot of elbow grease and can result in backache. There are accidental slips and falls that could lead to injuries. All the above things can be averted with just one simple step. If you are a responsible homeowner and looking for safe bathroom cleaning, you should opt for professional bathroom cleaning services to do the task for you.

Get a Germ-Free and Sanitised Bathroom
It is important for you to have a germ free and hygienic bathroom. We tend to spend 70 percent of our lives at home.
